From the Artist…This year marks my 63rd anniversary of painting. During my lifetime, I have painted literally thousands of paintings…I really don’t know exactly how many. I am actually painting longer than 63 years, but I count the years from when I sold my first painting at age 18 to my school, The Art Students League, for five dollars, and thus began my professional career as an artist. I have painted every day of my life that I could possible paint. Painting is like breathing to me…I can’t imagine not painting. I try to counsel young people to find something that they love to do and it will make all the difference in one’s lifetime. An average day for me (if I can use the word average very loosely) begins early in the morning standing in front of my easel and I say to myself, ‘How can I paint this painting differently than any other painting I have ever done before?’ In other words, I challenge myself with possible failure in order to push my creative edges to the maximum. I know if I paint along a well-traveled road, I will create a proven and salable painting. But…this is not me, and I refuse to travel that path. I try to find a new and creative way to paint each and every time. My philosophy of life is that every one should do something in their life that contributes to the quality of life for others. I feel that if we create value for others, it will in turn enrich our own lives. For me, when I create a work of art that someone else is enriched by, then I am fulfilled and my purpose in life is complete. Then I paint another, and the process starts all over again.
